Field Hockey Triumphs over Scranton in 3-2 Nailbiter

Kerri Mountz stopped seven shots for the victory; Lindsey Quinn had a goal and assist

Scranton, Pa. – Marywood University defeated the University of Scranton for just the second time in the past 26 years with a 3-2 victory on Tuesday in its field hockey home opener. The Pacers defeated the Royals for the first time since 2016.

The Pacers (4-3) scored the first three goals of the game on its first three shots, and they held off a Royals (4-3) squad that outshot them by a 14-8 rate.

Lindsey Quinn led the Pacers with a goal and an assist. Kerri Mountz was masterful in the cage with seven saves.

Less than three minutes from the opening whistle, Jenna Dickey put the Pacers ahead with a goal. Following a penalty corner, Quinn pushed the ball ahead with a left-handed feed. Dickey poked in the attempt from just 3 yards away.

In the second quarter, Lindsey Gladden outmaneuvered both a back and goalkeeper to increase the Pacers' lead in the 17th minute. Facing away from the cage, Gladden turned to her left side and put a shot to the corner post.

Quinn and Sara Sterchak teamed up to add the Pacers' third goal. A mere 63 seconds into the second half, Sterchak dribbled a penalty corner feed around the right perimeter. Her cross was one-timed by Quinn from 13 yards away for the 3-0 advantage.

Scranton responded 46 seconds later. Amelia Sharp converted a penalty stroke to the left side.

In the 51st minute, Caroline Mullen made it a one-goal game on a penalty corner opportunity. Her first goal of the season came from the left side with the Royals playing a woman-up after a green card issued to the Pacers team.

Marywood received the good fortune of two outstanding defensive plays to keep the Royals at bay. With 5:49 remaining, Quinn stopped a 2-on-1 breakaway from materializing by fishing the ball away from a forward. At the 3:45 mark of the fourth quarter, Sophia Cesare pushed away a dangerous cross attempt that proved to be the Royals' final threat.

Cesare also secured a defensive save for the Pacers.

Marywood ended a 20-game losing streak to the Royals with a 3-2 overtime win at Scranton in 2016. Prior to that, the Pacers had lost 20 consecutive games to their crosstown rivals dating back to 1993. In similar fashion, Mountz registered seven saves that game, and Quinn had an assist.

It marked coach Julie Trott's first home victory.

The Pacers host Susquehanna University on Saturday at 4:00 pm.
