Gwynedd Mercy's Fast Pace Offense Outruns Marywood

Scranton, Pa. - Gwynedd Mercy University's fast-paced offense was too much for Marywood University to keep up with as the Griffins left Scranton with a 108-70 Atlantic East Conference women's basketball victory Saturday afternoon.

GMU improved to 6-7 and secured their first league victory of the year. The Pacers fell to 3-9 (0-2).

Gwynedd Mercy plays a "Grinnell College" style offense, where they rotate five players frequently, aim to have 100 field goal attempts in a game, and take a lot of three pointers. The Griffins took 63 first half shots, and despite only connecting on 20 of them (31.7%), built a 54-30 halftime lead.  They were able to hit 9 of 37 three points attempts, just a 24.3% clip, but limited Marywood to 2 of 12 (16.7%) shooting from long range and 8 of 27 (29.6%) from the floor in the first half alone.

The Griffins continued their fast-paced offense in the fourth quarter, and went on for the 38 point victory. For the game, the Griffins went 41-116 (35.3%) from the floor, 16-61 (26.2) from three-point range and 10-22 (45.5%) from the free throw line.  They out-rebounded Marywood 69-63.

Aryah Aungst had a game-high 18 points and a career-high 19 rebounds for Marywood while Cait Reilly had 14. Aungst's 19 rebounds place her tied for 6th all-time in single-game rebounds with Natasha Hessling.  Aungst's 15 defensive rebounds are two shy of tying the singe game record.  Sydney Thompson led GMU with 16 points.  Chayanne Fine had 15 while Tamia Wessels added 13.

Marywood travels to Wesley College (Delaware) Saturday in search of their first conference win of the season.  Tip-off in Dover is set for 1:00 pm.
