Pacers Ring in the New Year with 18-Point Second Half Comeback Win

Aryah Aungst scored 24 points in just the second half, finishes with 26

Scranton, Pa. – Marywood University came back from an 18-point halftime deficit to edge Penn College of Technology 73-69 in women's basketball on Monday night. After the trailing nearly the entirety of the game, the Pacers took the lead in the final minute to knock off the Wildcats to open the calendar year.

Savannah Purdy made a fast-break layup in the paint to take a 70-69 lead with 49 seconds remaining. Aryah Aungst intercepted a pass at the top of the key to set up the go-ahead basket.

On the other end of the court, Emily Theobald fished out a loose ball on an errant pass with 39 seconds on the clock. Theobald captured an offensive rebound on a missed Purdy shot with seven seconds left and put it in the basket. Theobald made her foul shot for an old-fashioned three-point play that made it a two-possession game and seal the victory.

Aungst tied for a game-high 26 points with eight rebounds. She only made two points and attempted just two shots in the first half. Aungst shot 10 of 18 for 24 points in the second half alone.

Theobald finished with a season-high 14 rebounds. Olivia Kosin produced 14 points. Allison Bashore tallied six assists, and Katie Wolfgang had four swipes.

Marywood opened the second half on a 13-2 run to eat into the Wildcats' lead. Wolfgang ignited the offense with a 3-pointer on the opening possession. Aungst scored seven consecutive points to cut once 18-lead disadvantage to four points (47-43) on a jump shot from Bashore at the top of the key at the 2:46 mark of the third quarter. Through the first 7:15 of the third quarter, the Pacers outscored the Wildcats 18-4.

Penn kept the Pacers at bay and increase their lead to nine at the start of the fourth quarter. Aungst made a one possession came with a jumper near the midway point of the quarter, and Wolfgang's second steal in as many possessions set up an Aungst jumper to make it a one-point game (62-61) with 4:33 left.

Marywood evened the score at the 2:20 mark on an Aungst free throw, and Madison Klock's 3-pointer from the corner at 1:36 seemed to be the dagger in the Pacers' hearts to go ahead 69-66. Aungst responded with her third jumper from the free-throw line on a Purdy assist to set up the Pacers' run in the last minute.

After playing their first game in more than three weeks, the Pacers (3-7) have a quick turnaround, traveling to Immaculata University Wednesday in the Atlantic East Conference opener.
