Women's Basketball Falls Short in Atlantic East Opener

Aryah Aungst garners second-straight 20-plus game

Immaculata, Pa. - Marywood University opened the Atlantic East Conference women's basketball schedule with a 66-51 loss to Immaculata University on Wednesday. The Mighty Macs opened up a five-point game at halftime by outscoring the Pacers 35-25 in the second half. 

The loss puts an end to the Pacers' six-game winning streak over the Macs. Immaculata's last win over Marywood came on Jan. 31, 2015. 

Aryah Aungst finished with her second 20-plus effort in three days. Aungst finished with a double-double with 22 points and 14 rebounds. She also contributed five assists and went a perfect 7 of 7 from the line.

Emily Theobald provided 10 points and seven rebounds. Cait Reilly finished with eight points in limited action.

Immaculata shot 35.1 percent from the floor to the Pacers' 32.8 percent mark. Marywood committed 25 turnovers that led the 20 points for the Mighty Macs.

The Mighty Macs took an early double-digit lead, putting up a 16-6 advantage following Meghan Ricker's 3-pointer with 3:43 left in the first quarter.

Marywood opened the second quarter on an 11-3 run over 3:30. Allison Bashore connected for a 3-pointer at 7:44, and Aungst put in an offensive put-back to even the score at 22-22. Aungst supplied the Pacers with a 24-22 lead on a pair of free throws at 6:39. 

After nearly three minutes of scoreless action, Theresea Kearney recaptured the lead on a 3-pointer that led to a nine-point scoring streak. Reilly made a layup off of a Theobald steal with 15 seconds to head into the break trailing by five.

Brielle Rigo led the Mighty Macs with 20 points and 18 rebounds. Jordan Rook had 16 points. Kearney finished with 11 points and six assists, and Ricker reached double figures with 10.

Marywood returns home on Saturday to take on Gwynedd Mercy University.
