Wesley Holds Off Marywood, 84-80 on Senior Day

Scranton, Pa. - Visiting Wesley College, ranked 7th in the region, held off a late Marywood rally and escaped the Insalaco Arena with a 84-80 win Saturday afternoon. The victory improved the Atlantic East leading Wolverines to 15-8 (9-1).

The loss sends the Pacers to 6-17 (1-9 Atlantic East) and forces a must-win game for Marywood against Neumann Wednesday if the Pacers wish to claim the final playoff berth.

Donovan Catchings set a new single season record for assists, picking up eight to give him 146 on the year to surpass Isiah Walker's 144 career assists (2003-04). Jack DeGroot had 23 points while Tom DeFilippo finished with 18. Adam Boussatta added 15.

Brian Cameron led the Wolverines with a game-high 25 points. Mychal Stefanides added 20, and Michael McCants joined them in double figures with 16.

After trailing by as many as 11 (28-17) with six minutes left in the first half, the Pacers allowed Wesley just four more points the rest of the way and closed the gap to just a two-point (32-30) deficit at halftime.

Marywood had a quick 6-0 lead to start the game after back-to-back treys from DeFilippo. A 7-0 run from the visitors gave the Wolverines their first lead moments later. Tied at 11, a 9-0 run from Wesley gave them a 20-11 lead with just under 10 minutes remaining in the stanza. Marywood responded with five straight points on a three from Catchings and a pair of freebies from DeGroot, but Wesley quickly extended that lead to the aforementioned double-digit lead with 6:02 left.

DeGroot had 12 in the first half alone while DeFilippo had six boards by the break. Marywood was 8 of 21 (38.1%) from the floor in the opening 20 and Wesley hit 13 of their 31 attempts (41.9%).  Stefanides had 10 at the break for the Wolverines.

After a three from Boussatta early in the second half kept it close (36-33), a 10-2 run from Wesley extended their lead back to double digits (46-35) for the second time in the game. Over the next seven minutes Marywood would cut the visitor's lead to five twice, but each time Wesley pushed their lead back out to a comfortable 8-9 point lead.

Down eight (74-66) with 3:10 to play, the Pacers used a 5-0 run over the next 1:51 to get to within one, 74-73.  Four consecutive free throws from the Wolverines extended their lead back to five (78-73). DeFilippo then picked up a key steal with 23 seconds left, was fouled and sank both to give Marywood a shot.  After another intentional foul and two made free throws by Wesley's Greg Bloodsworth, Catchings made two of his own from the charity stripe to make it 80-77.

Cameron would sink two at the other end (82-77) before Catchings hit a three with two second left to make it a two point game.  With Marywood forced to foul again, Wesley took advantage and Stefanides sank both to seal the four-point victory.

Prior to the game, Marywood and Head Coach Enrico Mastroianni honored seniors Zach Tinkham, Eric Sica and DeFelippo.

Marywood will host Neumann Wednesday night at 8:00 pm.
