Men's Basketball Keeps Playoff Hopes Alive in Late Thriller over Neumann

Marywood could punch a ticket to the playoffs with a win over Marymount Saturday

Scranton, Pa. - On the brink of playoff elimination, Marywood University pulled ahead in the last minute of regulation to down Neumann University 71-69 on Wednesday evening in Atlantic East Conference men's basketball. With a win on Saturday at Marymount, the Pacers can punch their ticket to the Atlantic East postseason.

Anthony DeGori hit a go-ahead 3-pointer to reclaim the Pacers' lead with 33 seconds remaining. DeGori's long-ranged shot from a Donovan Catchings assist supplied Marywood with 68-66 lead.

On the ensuing possession, Catching fielded a loose ball for a steal that gave Marywood the upper hand. Jason Holman made a free throw, and Adam Boussatta collected an offensive rebound off of a miss. Boussatta nailed the winning points with consecutive free throws made.

DeGori matched a career-high with 15 points on 6 of 7 shooting, including a trio of 3-point baskets. Holman was a rebound shy of a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds.

Playing all 40 minutes, Catchings provided 13 points, six assists and three steals.

Jack DeGroot added 12 points, and Boussatta finished with 10 points and seven boards.

Marywood (7-17, 2-9 Atlantic East) made adjustments at halftime. After going cold from beyond the arc in the first half (21.43 percent), Marywood connected on 63.64 percent (7 of 11) on 3-point shots in the second. The Pacers made 47.4 percent of its attempts for the game, while the Knights made 49.1 percent.

Free throws played a major factor in the end result. Neumann went 8 of 15 from the line for a 53.5 percent mark. The Pacers made 87.5 percent of their free throw shots with the lone miss coming on Boussatta's game-clinching offensive rebound.

Neumann's Waheem Lowman totaled a game-high 17 points. Justin Smith finished with a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds.

A Marywood win over Marymount on Saturday will result in a berth to the playoffs. If the Saints come out on top, Marywood and Neumann will compete in a play-in game on Monday for the No. 6 seed.
