Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Neumann Holds Off Late Marywood Comeback Bid

Scranton, Pa. - Visiting Neumann University held off a late push from Marywood University for a key 67-61 Atlantic East women's basketball victory Wednesday evening at the Insalaco Arena.

The Knights moved to 7-17 (39 Atlantic East) while Marywood slipped to 8-14 (4-7). Marywood must now win at league-leading Marymount (Va.) Saturday if they wish to host a first round playoff game.  Otherwise, the Pacers will travel to Immaculata.

Neither team shot well in the first half with Neumann going 10 of 38 (26.3%) and Marywood 8 of 24 (33.3%), but Neumann held a slight 28-24 lead at intermission.

With the score knotted at 31-31 early in the second half, it looked like the Knights would pull away as they hit back-to-back three's to go up 37-31.  Marywood countered with a three of their own, but Neumann responded with a 8-0 run to go up 45-34 with two minutes left in the third.

Marywood's Olivia Kosin then scored four points in 45 seconds to get the Pacers back to within seven (45-38).

An early fourth quarter run from the Pacers, capped by a lay-in for Killie Wyers, made it 57-56 with 4:18 left.  Later, Kosin would not the game at 59-59 by sinking the back end of two freebies.

A layup from Kosin would tie things up at 61-61 with 1:59 to go, but the Knights' defense would force two turnovers and bad shots, and Kortni Taylor would put away Marywood with a three with 17.2 seconds left to put the Knights up four.

In all, Marywood would get to within one point five times in the final 6:54, and tie it twice, but was never able to take the lead.

Missed freebies proved costly for both teams, with Marywood going 10 of 18 (55.6%) and Neumann going 13 of 24 (54.2%) from the line.

Marywood shot 39% for the game while Neumann shot 36.9%.  Neumann had a 16-5 advantage in second chance points. Marywood's benched outscored Neumann's, 30-9.

As mentioned, Marywood travels to face league-leading Marymount (Va.) University Saturday for their final regular season matchup.  Game time in Arlington is set for 1:00 pm.
