Yelencsics' Record-Tying Nine Goals Jolt Pacers in Opening Win

Wilkes-Barre Twp., Pa. – Senior midfielder Molly Yelencsics tied the Marywood University women's lacrosse program record for single-game goals in the season opener. Yelencsics' nine goals led the Pacers to top King's College 18-8 Tuesday on the road.

With only a career-high of five goals entering her senior campaign, Yelencsics matched Taylor McKeown's 2010 record of nine set against Immaculata University on March 25, 2010. Yelencsics finished 6 of 8 in free-position shots to match the school mark and move to the top of the Atlantic East Conference in goals scored.

Marywood scored the first five goals in the opening 17 minutes and held on to an 8-2 lead before the Monarchs chipped at the lead in the final six minutes of the first half.

Gwyneth Gleason opened her senior season with two goals and two assists for four points. Gleason added six draw controls and a pair of caused turnovers.

Zoe Simeone garnered a hat trick. She added three ground balls. Kayla McCabe finished with a goal and an assist with three ground balls as well.

On the defensive end of the field, Sami Stein provided three caused turnovers and three ground balls. Melanie Wittick scooped six draw controls, and Maeve MacKenna tallied three ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Starting in net in her first collegiate game, freshman Emily Dyminski had four saves and three ground balls.

King's received five points (3g-2a) from Jen O'Connor. Mary Kate Klodarska had a hat trick.

The Monarchs (1-2) trimmed the Pacers' lead down to three when Klodarska found the net on an O'Connor feed with 53 seconds remaining before halftime. Yelencsics changed momentum with a pair of goals in the last 27 seconds to head into the break with a 10-5 lead.

King's made it a three-goal game (10-7) with a pair of goals in the opening six minutes. Yelencsics again ended the threat with a free-position goal at 24:11. It ignited a five-goal run that was capped by an Ashley King unassisted netter with 10 minutes remaining.

Marywood finished the contest by outscoring King's 8-1 in the last 25 minutes. Gleason kicked off the running clock with 42 seconds to go.

The Pacers held on to a 33-17 advantage in shots and edged King's 24-21 in ground balls. Marywood won the draw control game 16-11.

Marywood continues its seven-game, 26-day road trip on Saturday when it travels to Arcadia University. The Pacers look to even the series (4-3) with the Knights that began in 2014. Marywood has a three-game winning streak against Arcadia that began with a 10-9 overtime win in 2018 and an 18-12 victory in the ECAC quarterfinals during the same season.
