Field Hockey Upended by Gwynedd Mercy, 3-2

Gwynedd Valley, Pa. — Marywood University fell to Gwynedd Mercy University 3-2 Tuesday in Atlantic East Conference field hockey play. The Pacers were unable to find an equalizer in the last seven minutes of regulation. 

Allie Rehnert scored for second straight contest for the Pacers. Rehnert has three goals in the past two games. Milana Straub tallied the second goal. 

Marywood received assists from Sami Abbinanti and Lauren Youngken. Rachel Yohn had one save in the losing effort. 

The Grifinns went ahead early with a Lauren Jani goal in the sixth minute.

In the 16th minute, Rehnert responded when she tapped in a ball that ping-ponged its way into the circle. Cassie Slusser delivered a hard-struck ball into the scoring area. Youngken redirected it to the far side for Rehnert to hammer into the cage. 

A mere 1:44 later, Ambert Sims penned the go-ahead goal from Jani, who then assisted an insurance goal to Cheyenne Avellino in the 44th minutes 

Trailing by two, Marywood cut the deficit in half in the 53rd minute. Off of a penalty corner, Sami Abbinanti hit a ball that was tomahawked into the cage by Milana Straub

The Pacers had three penalty corner chances to find an equalizer but came up with their pockets empty. Lauren Youngken hit a shot at the 57:02 mark that was stopped by defender Kaci Murray. 

Marywood doubled the Griffins in shots (14-7) and had a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal (7-4). The Pacers more than doubled the Griffins (14-6) in penalty corners. 

The Pacers (7-6, 1-2 Atlantic East) look to get on track on Sunday. Marywood travels to Wilkes-Barre Township to take on King's College.
