Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Mulherin, Sorce Lead Women's Soccer Shutout of Gwynedd Mercy

Scranton, Pa. - Riley Mulherin had a hat-trick and Josephine Sorce had five points on a goal and three assists as Marywood University defeated Gwynedd Mercy University 6-0 in Atlantic East (AEC) women's soccer action Saturday.

The win is Marywood's fifth in a row and seventh of their last eight. The shutout is the fourth straight for the Pacers' defense as they extend their scoreless streak to 453:15. Marywood did not allow a shot on goal, and out-shot the Griffins 31-2 on the day. The Pacers (9-4, 3-0 AEC) have only allowed ten shots on goal over their last five wins.

Sorce opened the scoring in the ninth minute of action when she took a pass from Madison Blackshire at the top of the 18 and placed a left-sided shot to the right-side of the goal for what would turn out to be the game-winner.

Mulherin started her scoring on the day just over two minutes later when she took a long pass from Sorce, beat the Griffins' goalkeeper with one touch and then finished into an empty net.

In the 25th minute, Brooke Longstreet dribbled 50 yards down the right flank before laying it off to Marissa Boles, who ripped a shot from a tough angle on the right sideline. Boles' shot sneaked just over the outstretched hands of GMU keeper Molly Flemming and into the far upper 90 netting to make it 3-0 in favor of Marywood.

Mulherin got her second of the game in the 27th minute, beating a defender down the left side and scoring on a breakaway unassisted.

In the second half, a hustling Elizabeth Levine finished a Sorce shot on goal that bounced off the keeper in the center of the goal to put the Pacers up 5-0. It was Levine's first tally of the season. In the 81st, Mulherin closed the scoring on by finishing another feed from Sorce.

Rebekah Becker and Victoria Talarico each played a half in goal for the Pacers. Flemming made 13 saves in 85:28 of action while Haleigh Kaufman made one save at the end of the first half.

Marywood will travel to Radnor Wednesday for a key showdown with Cabrini University. The winner will have the inside track on the top seed for the AEC post-season tournament. Kickoff is set for 4:30 pm at Edith Robb Dixon field.
