Defense Posts Another Shutout in Women's Soccer 3-0 Win at Cabrini

Radnor, Pa. - Three different players scored and the defense picked up another clean sheet as Marywood University defeated host Cabrini University 3-0 in Atlantic East women's soccer action Wednesday afternoon.

Marywood (10-4, 4-0 AEC) now has the inside track on the top seed for the post-season tournament after handing the Cavaliers (7-5-2) their first conference setback of the season (3-1 AEC).

The Pacers have pitched a shutout in all conference games, not having allowed a goal in the last 543:15, have won six straight (five by shutout) and eight of their last nine.

Riley Mulherin, the reigning AEC Offensive Player of the Week, opened the scoring for Marywood in the 19th minute of action. Mulherin took a long ball from centerback Julia Rodriguez that split two defenders, took one touch past the Cabrini netminder just outside the 18 and slotted home to an empty net.  With her team-best seventh tally of the season, Mulherin redeemed herself from a narrow miss at the far post just moments before.

The score would remain 1-0 until the break, with Marywood enjoying a 7-1 edge in shots and not allowing a shot on goal from the Cavaliers.

Just 2:17 into the second half, Mulherin hooked up with Josephine Sorce for an all-important insurance goal for Marywood. Sorce stepped through several challenges in the air to win possession, then found Madison Blackshire, who played it to Mulherin along the left wing. Without anyone advanced enough to cross to, Mulherin slipped the ball back to Sorce at the central-top of the 18 yard box. Sorce took one touch right and curled a ball to far-post netting, doubling the Pacers' lead.

After the Marywood second goal, Cabrini stepped up the pressure, and fired off numerous shots, but only two required efforts from Rebekah Becker, who handled them to pick up another clean sheet.

In the final moments of the game, Mulherin picked up her fourth point of the afternoon with a beautifully slotted ball to the far post that found the foot of Victoria Tzitzis. Ashlyn Jess connected on a short restart with Emily Welsh just inside the midfield line to start the play. Welsh found Mulherin with one touch to the corner, and the rookie dribbled in and slotted the ball on the ground to Tzitzis, who put it home with :26 left.

For the game, Marywood outshot Cabrini 12-8, placing eight shots on frame to two for the Cavaliers. Becker made two stops to record the solo shutout, while Cabrini's Ashley Tutzauer made a game-high fiive stops.

Marywood hosts Centenary University (NJ) Saturday at 1:00 pm. Prior to the game, the Pacers will honor their seniors at approximately 12:30 pm.
