Senior Defenders Set Shutout Record, Score in 8-1 Win over Centenary

Scranton, Pa. - Senior Day was extra special for defenders Ashlyn Jess and Brooke Longstreet as the duo helped set a new Marywood University women's soccer consecutive scoreless minute record before each scored goals in a 8-1 win over Centenary University Saturday afternoon in Scranton.

Marywood (11-4, 5-0 Atlantic East) did eventually give up a goal to the Cyclones (3-8, 0-4 AEC), but it was not until both the Marywood team consecutive scoreless minutes streak and goalkeeper Rebekah Becker's individual consecutive minutes scoreless streak shattered record books. Marywood set a new benchmark after playing 610:39 scoreless before allowing the second half goal. That streak also allowed Becker to set a new individual consecutive scoreless streak at 547:14, edging Meghan Coyle's mark of 546:25 set in 2010.

The Pacers, winners of their last seven and nine of their past 10, also increased their win total to their highest since 2017 (13) and matched their win total from 2016.

Madison Blackshire kicked off a strong day for the Pacers' offense in the 12th minute. Blackshire checked back to pressure a dropped ball from the Cyclones' midfield to their defense, and that pressure allowed Victoria Tzitzis to pick off the pass and find Josephine Sorce for the game's first tally.

Nine minutes later, Blackshire took a long through ball from Mackenzie Bennett, beat the Centenary keeper and doubled the Marywood lead. In the 28th, Blackshire found Tzitzis on the flank for the game's third goal.

In the 44th minute, Elizabeth Levine took a long pass from Shannon MacDougall and blasted one home for a 4-0 Marywood lead.

After the half, Longstreet opened the scoring after picking off a failed clearance attempt. Longstreet snagged the ball just outside the right corner of the 18, took one touch and rifled a shot to the far-left upper 90. Five minutes later, Sorce started a series of one-touch plays to stretch the Marywood lead to 6-0. Sorce intercepted a goalkick, one-timed it to Tzitzis, who headed it to a charging Marissa Boles. Boles ran through that pass for a one-time shot that ripped past the goalkeeper into far post netting.

Unfortunately for Marywood, their shutout streak would end there. Right after Boles' goal, the Cyclones worked their way around and fed a ball to Cassandra Ferguson, who beat Becker at the top of the 18.

Marywood closed the games with a beautiful goal courtesy of Ashlyn Jess (Blackshire assist) and in the 90th minute from Elizabeth Levine (assisted by Maria Madonna).

Marywood had an 18-9 (15-4) advantage in shots on goal. Becker made two saves in 70:28 while Victoria Talarico made one stop.

Marywood, who clinched the top seed in the AEC post-season tournament with today's win, hosts Neumann University Wednesday at 4:00 pm in the regular season finale.
