Men's Soccer Comes Up Short to Cabrini, 2-1

Scranton, Pa. — A short-changed Marywood University squad that started a goalkeeper-turned-outfielder and just three reserves came just shy of upending first-place Cabrini University Wednesday in non-conference. The Cavaliers prevailed 2-1 in Atlantic East Conference men's soccer action.

Chris Valdes hit a 25-yard direct kick in the 87th minute. Valdes nailed a ball to the lower-left corner to halve the Pacers' deficit to 2-1.

Marywood had a late chance with a Ryan Ruffino breakaway chance and a corner kick but the Pacers were unable to get a shot off in the final three minutes.

Filling in at goalkeeper, Niko Leibkuchler made seven saves.

Marywood was forced to start one goalkeeper in the outfield and had just three reserves, including another goalkeeper in a field player position. Cabrini moves to 10-4-2 overall and undefeated through five games in conference play. Marywood falls to 2-9-1 and 1-3 in the Atlantic East.

Cabrini scored on a pair of long-played balls into the box. In the 39th minute, Matt Kekatos charged to the line on a spot-on Christian Rafter direct kick that found his head before finding the net. The Cavaliers doubled their lead on a long Dakota Bauer ball served from the midfield sideline. Bauer's ball found Josh Cunningham in the box, and Cunningham headed the ball into the right side of the goal.

Marywood's only other shot came in the 22nd minute off a Troy Humphries attempt.

Cabrini had a 20-6 advantage in shots and a 9-2 lead in shots on goal. The Cavaliers had seven corners to the Pacers' two.

The Pacers look to help their playoff chances Saturday when they travel to Centenary University.
