Defensive Battle Ends in Late St. Mary's Winner

Scranton, Pa. — Marywood University field hockey came short in a defensive battle with Atlantic East Conference leader St. Mary's College of Maryland in a 1-0 loss on Sunday. The Pacers and Seahawks played 47 minutes of scoreless action before St. Mary's tacked on the goal-ahead goal in the opening of the fourth quarter.

The Seahawks (8-7, 4-0 AEC) found the back of the cage in the 47th minute. On an Anna Eaton-inserted penalty corner, Audrey Dickens redirected a Sophie Carlson shot from the top of the circle, lifting it to the right frame of the goal.

Marywood's best opportunity to take a lead came in the third quarter. The Pacers had a string of four penalty corners in a minute span. Mackenzie Hoats had the lone shot on goal that was stopped by Kaley Christman. Hoats had another chance in the 38th minute that was sent wide-left off of a blocked shot.

The Pacers found their ground after the Seahawks dominated possession in the first quarter. St. Mary's had five of their six shots on goal for the game in the opening stanza. Grace LePage stopped a shot at the line for a defensive save.

The defensive-laden game produced just 13 total shots and seven attempts on goal. The Seahawks edged the Pacers 8-5 in shots but had a 6-1 advantage in shots on goal. St. Mary's eked out the Pacers 7-6 in penalty corners.

Marywood (8-8, 1-3 Atlantic East) will secure the No. 4 seed with a win at Neumann University on Wednesday night. If the Pacers hold on to the spot, Marywood would host the fifth seed on Saturday.
