Sorce’s Brace Leads Second Half Comeback in Pacers’ Win

Cazenovia, N.Y. - Despite ringing the crossbar off the opening tap, Marywood University trailed host Cazenovia College for 45 minutes Sunday afternoon in women's soccer action. Two second half goals from Josephine Sorce sandwiched around a Madison Blackshire goal helped fuel a come-from-behind win for the Pacers, who defeated the Wildcats 3-1.

Marywood nearly scored on the opening kickoff, forcing the Wildcat's keeper to push the ball up and play it off the crossbar. Although they almost went down 1-0 right away, the hosts came right back at the Pacers (5-4) and caught them on a counter-attack, as Riley Minor scored the first goal of the game just 1:20 into the contest off a cross from Dimetria McIntyre.

The score would remain 1-0 in favor of Cazenovia (5-7) for the next 45 minutes regardless of Marywood outshooting them 10-2 in the opening half. Numerous Marywood chances went either high or wide, and the Pacers could not capitalize on seven first half corner kicks despite getting touches on most of them.

Things quickly changed in the second half. Sorce picked up a loose ball on top of the 18 yard box and chipped netminder Kaylana Criasia to knot the game at 1-1 just 1:19 into the second half.

Moments later, Marissa Boles beat a defender down the right wing and slotted the ball to a central-running Madison Blackshire, who one-timed it past Criasia for the eventual game-winner.

In the 71st minute, Sorce provided the Pacers with an all-important insurance tally, as she dribbled through several defenders before again chipping Craisia for her second goal of the  game.

Marywood held a 19-3 advantage in shots and a 13-3 advantage in shots on goal. The Pacers also had 10 corners to none for the Wildcats. Marywood's Rebekah Becker made two saves between the pipes for the win while Criasia had 10 for the Wildcats.

Marywood opens Atlantic East Conference play Wednesday with a road trip to Immaculata. Kickoff is slated for 6:30pm.
