Men's Basketball Rallies to Defeat John Jay, Faces NYU in Title Game

Brooklyn, N.Y. - Marywood University improved to 2-1 on the year with a come-from-behind 72-61 win over John Jay College in the opening round of the NYU Tip-Off Tournament Saturday evening.

The Pacers rallied from an eight-point second half deficit over the final 15 minutes to earn their second win of the young season. Jason Holman led all scorers with a 23 point night on 9-of-19 shooting. The junior was also 5-for-6 from the charity stripe. Brendan Franko finished with 17 and Matt McKenna added 11.

Trailing 43-35 with 14:57 to go, a Franko three ignited a 10-2 Marywood run over just four minutes that knotted the game at 45-45.

A pair of free throws briefly put John Jay back on top by two, but Robert Van Brunt hit a trey to give the Pacers the lead at 48-47.

After the teams traded leads until the game was tied at 54-54 with 5:39 to play, Holman would score four of the games' next six points on a pair of layups to give the Pacers a 59-55 lead with just under four minutes remaining.

Holding a three point lead (62-59) with two minutes to play, the Marywood defense clamped down as the Pacers outscored the Bloodhounds 10-2 over the final 2:06 to pick up the victory.

Marywood will take on host NYU (3-0), a 83-40 winner over Pratt Institute in the opening game of the tournament.

The Pacers and Violets will tip off at 2:00 pm Sunday at the Brooklyn Athletic Facility.
