NYU Claims Tourney Title with Win Over Marywood

Holman, Franko named to All-Tournament Team for Pacers

Brooklyn, N.Y. - NYU men's basketball handed visiting Marywood University a 99-48 defeat to claim the NYU Tip-Off Tournament Championship Sunday afternoon. Jason Holman and Brendan Franko were named to the All-Tournament team for the Pacers, who fell to 2-2.

The Violets (4-0) had Bobby Hawkins named tourney MVP as he had 14 points and six boards coupled with 18 and 12 Friday.  Jacob Sussman and Alex Maticiuc were also named to the All-Tourney team for NYU.

NYU opened the Championship clash 4-of-5 from long-range, with three of those buckets coming from freshman Zay Freeney, to establish an early 12-5 edge. The Pacers came within three points soon after, but NYU immediately produced a 12-2 run that gave them a 13-point lead (24-11) with 12:27 left in the first.

Marywood (2-2) stayed within striking distance until the final four minutes of the frame when the Violets rattled off nine unanswered points, with Sussman scoring six, to go up 43-23.

NYU rode a 47.4 percent clip from three in the first half to hold a 49-29 advantage at intermission.

The second half was never close as the Violets shot over 50 percent from the floor and held Marywood to just six field goals to run away with another win.

Marywood hosts the Electric City Classic, presented by P.W. Washo, next weekend. The Pacers face off against Cairn University Friday night at 6:00 pm. That game will be followed at 8:00 pm with Penn State Abington versus Penn State Altoona. Friday's winners will meet Saturday in the 4:00 pm title game following the 2:00 pm consolation game.
