Cairn Upends Men's Basketball in OT

Scranton, Pa. - Cairn University completed a second half surge with an overtime win over Marywood University Friday evening in the open game of the Electric City Classic, presented by P.W. Washo, Inc. The Highlanders (4-1) responded from a 12-point first half deficit to force overtime, where they prevailed over the Pacers (2-3), 69-63.

Cairn will take on Penn State Altoona, a 81-74 winner over Penn State Abington, in Saturday's Championship game at 4:00 pm. Marywood will take on PSU Abington in the consolation game at 2:00 pm.

Kameron Clark led all scorers in Cairn's win over the Pacers with a game-high 24 points. Jesse Rivera followed with 18 points for the Highlanders. Marywood got 16 from Corey Perkins, while Caleb Vigil added 11.

Both teams shot below 38% in the first half, but the visiting Highlanders hit nearly 69% of their field goals in the second half to erase their 12-point halftime deficit. Marywood, meanwhile, was held to less than 38% shooting for the entire game.

Down by 10 (41-31) with 16:50 to play, Cairn used a 10-0 run over a five minute span to tie the game up. After Marywood briefly took a two-point lead on a jumper from Brendan Franko, the Highlanders would keep the game close until Rivera's jumper with 6:28 remaining gave the visitors their first lead since the 9:16 mark of the first half.

After Rivera tied the game at 58-58 with 2:23 left in regulation, no team would find the basket again until overtime.

There, Wes Murry and Rivera opened with back-to-back baskets to give the Highlanders a four-point cushion. Vigil hit a three for Marywood to get them to with one (64-63) with 1:58 left in the extra session, but the Pacers were kept off the scoreboard the rest of the way as Cairn scored the final five points of the night.
