Pacers Overpower Griffins to Advance to Atlantic East Semis

Fourth-seeded Marywood will travel to Cabrini on Thursday

Scranton, Pa. - Fourth-seeded Marywood University used a 3-1 win over Gwynedd Mercy University Tuesday to reach the Atlantic East Conference volleyball semifinals for the third consecutive season. The Pacers will advance to face top-seeded Cabrini University on Thursday. 

Marywood defeated the Griffins by scores of 25-19, 21-25, 25-17, 25-15. 

The Pacers' two-headed attack of Rebecca Klemovitch and Shannon Corr proved too much for the Griffins. Klemovitch finished with 12 kills, four aces, three blocks and a .308 attack percentage. Corr posted a double-double with 11 kills and 10 digs with three aces. 

Defensively, the Pacers (11-19) were heralded by Donna Bostjancic's 17 digs. Evangeline Kelly came off the bench to tally 10 digs. 

Playing in her final home match at the Insalaco Arena, graduate student Annie Heyen had her top performance in her newfound role as reserve setter with 33 assists and nine digs. 

Casey Hagerstrom had a strong performance with nine kills with just one error for a.500 attack perentage. Hagerstrom also garnered three total blocks. 

Marywood had a .141 attack percentage for the contest. The Griffins hit .060. 

Gwynedd Mercy (9-20) enjoyed an outstanding performance from Aybria Purnell. Purnell finished with 17 kills, including six in a second-set win. Ashley Morris provided 25 digs on the defensive end, and Bridget McTamney totaled 27 asssts. 

The Griffins were particularly strong at the net with 10 total blocks. Ashley Brown tabbed six block assists. 

Marywood captured a significant win in the first set that propelled them to victory. In a set that featured seven lead changes, Marywood won six of seven points to take a 17-12 lead. The Griffins trimmed the Pacers' lead to two on a Brown kill, but the Pacers tallied five straight points to take a 23-16 advantage. Mikayla Meek finished off the set with a kill. 

The Pacers fell to Cabrini 3-0 on Oct. 7 in their regular season matchup.
