Cabrini Claims AEC Title on PKs

Scranton, Pa. - Visiting two-seed Cabrini University shut down Marywood University's offensive efforts all game and Rebekah Cunningham converted the winning penalty kick as the Cavaliers earned the Atlantic East Conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III women's soccer tournament after a 0-0 double overtime tie.

Cunningham, the fifth shooter for the Cavaliers (10-5-4) put it home to seal an overall impressive performance for the visitors. All game, they kept Marywood's league-leading offense in check. Cabrini doubled the Pacers in shots (18-9) and in shots on goal (12-6). 

Both teams had chances to seal the win in regulation, but Marywood's Rebekah Becker came up with 12 stops and Cabrini's Ashley Tutzauer stopped six to force the PKs. Tutzauer was named the Championship Tournament MVP after picking up three consecutive shutouts against Gwynedd Mercy, Neumann and Marywood.

Marywood and Cabrini traded saved penalties and makes in round one and two to have things at 1-1. Cabrini took a 2-1 lead in round three after a save from Tutzauer and make from their shooter. After a Marywood miss, Cabrini made another to take a 3-1 lead. Becker made a stop and Gillian Way converted her attempt to make it 3-2, but Cunningham iced the game by converting hers.

Marywood (13-4-1) awaits a possible berth into the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) tournament. Those selections will be announced Monday afternoon after the NCAA bracket is released.
