Scranton, Pa. — Marywood University posted its first men's basketball win of the season with a 84-67 triumph over Penn State Scranton on Tuesday. The Pacers even their record to 1-1 by shooting over 50 percent from the field.
Jason Holman set a new career-high with a double-double. Holman tallied 24 points and 11 rebounds. He shot 9 of 13 from the field. Defensively, he aided the Pacers with a game-high 27 plus/minus.
Declan McCarthy was the only other Marywood player in double figures. McCarthy scored 11 points in less than 15 minutes on the court. McCarthy connected on three of four attempts from beyond the arc.
Corey Perkins had six assists and seven points.
Adam Boussatta netted nine points.
Marywood was outstanding from long range, making 11 of 26 attempts for a 42.3 percent clip. The Pacers shored up their free-throw woes from their opener with a 77.3 percent mark at the charity stripe.
The Lions were boosted by Scranton High School product Robert McAndrew 's 24 points and eight rebounds. Matt Dessoye had a 13-point effort from the point guard position.
Penn State Scranton made a second-half comeback effort with success in the opening five minutes of the frame. Dessoye cut it to a two-possession game with a layup at the 16:12 mark. Marywood responded with a nine-point run in less than two minutes. Mason Mendrygral drew a foul on a fast-break chance and made both free throws to extend Marywood's lead to 56-41.
Marywood will travel to New York City this weekend at the NYU Tip-off Tournament. The Pacers will take on John Jay College in the opening round on Saturday at 4 p.m. Marywood looks to avenge a heartbreaking 67-65 loss to the Bloodhounds in 2019-20.
