Welcome Back Walk-off | Becker finishes off Lions with game-winning double

Vinny D'Auria hits a 3-run home run, reaches base six times

Scranton, Pa. – Scott Becker hit a game-winning, bases-clearing double to give Marywood University its first baseball victory of the season. Playing in the first home athletics event on Marywood's campus in over a year, the Pacers split a seven-inning doubleheader against Penn State Altoona.

Becker's theatrics sealed a dramatic 6-5 win in the nightcap of the twinbill. The Lions prevailed 16-7 in the season opener for both teams.

Trailing by one heading into their last set of at-bats, Morgan Theobald and Vinny D'Auria reached on a pair of walks. Becker drove in the pair with a two-RBI double over the right fielder's head that sent the tying and winning runs to the plate.

D'Auria reached base in all four at-bats with a hit and three walks. Michael Tempel hit a solo home run and scored a pair of runs. Shane Smith drove in two RBI.

With a 5-1 deficit, Marywood began the four-run comeback by sending all nine hitters to the plate in the bottom of the fourth. Jake Schuster led off the three-run inning by crushing a double to left field. After a Tempel free pass, Shane Smith found a right-center gap with a two-bagger that scored a pair. Max Slusser singled in a run, but the Lions were able to keep the Pacers at bay by stranding with bases loaded and just one out.

Freshman Gerard O'Hare picked up a victory in his first collegiate appearance. O'Hare came in for two scoreless innings of relief with four punchouts. Starting pitcher TJ Lacey struck out five in two innings.

Marywood found itself behind three runs on a Grant King bases-loaded double in the second inning. Altoona responded to Tempel's roundtripper in the bottom half with back-to-back home runs by Catcher Cumming and Jake Hillard.

Leftfielder Smith had an outfield assist by throwing out Max Breon at the plate to end the fourth inning.
