Metzger Ties Single-Game Points Record; Pacers' Comeback Effort Falls Short

Bethlehem, Pa. - Dalton Metzger tied the Marywood University men's lacrosse single-game points record in a 19-17 setback to Moravian College on Saturday. Metzger became the fourth Pacers' student-athlete to reach 10 points in one contest.

Metzger joins Marywood alums Matt Casto, Sam Trill and Riley Dobel to reach the acclaim. He is the first since Casto achieved the feat versus Keystone College in 2017.

Marywood (0-2) trailed by as many as seven goals in the third quarter before making its late comeback. With 36 seconds remaining, Zach Vaughan scored to trim the deficit to two. Marywood was unable to muster up two late heroic goals to push extra time.

Metzger finished with five goals and five assists. Patrick Dingwell matched him with five goals, and Vaughan finished with three goals and two assists.

On the defensive side of the field, Tyler Wren caused three turnovers and scooped four ground balls. Dingwell finished with three ground balls.

Zach Bradbury went 17 of 36 at the faceoff-x with seven ground balls. Connor Reed made eight saves with three ground balls, and Aiden Kilkenny netted his first career goal.

Moravian out-shot the Pacers 55-44 but led just 27-25 in shots on target. The Greyhounds held a distinct 47-26 advantage in ground balls.

Connor James rivaled Metzger for the game-high points totals with eight goals and an assist for the Greyhounds (2-0). Ben Walek picked up 16 ground balls at the faceoff for Moravian.

Both teams traded leads throughout the first quarter until James put Moravian ahead 6-5 just before the sound of the first horn. It kicked off a 6-1 Moravian run that culminated with a James' tally to take an 11-6 advantage. Dingwell scored just before the break to trim the halftime deficit to four.

Moravian opened the second half with three unanswered goals, and it enjoyed its largest lead (14-7) on a James' man-up goal with 8:42 remaining in the third period. Metzger had a hand in each of the next three goals, sandwiching one of his own between two assists to Zach Saneman's and Kilkenny's first tallies of the year.

The Greyhounds thrice put pressure on glimpses of Marywood momentum swings to take the lead, preventing Marywood from getting within four goals. A Griffin LeBlond goal stretched Moravian's lead to 19-14 with 3:57 left in the contest. The Pacers had a last-chance effort with three goals in a 1:21 span during the final two minutes of regulation. Dingwell tallied a goal to cut the lead to 19-16, and Vaughan capped the scoring on a Metzger assist with 36 seconds left.

Marywood received a man-up advantage on a slashing call, and Moravian was unable to hold onto possession after a faceoff win. Eric Stewart's shot went wide to ensure the final decision.

It was the first-ever matchup between the two programs.

Marywood opens its Atlantic East slate on Saturday, March 27 with a home tilt against Marymount University.
