Peters Ignites for Seven Goals in Opening Day Rout

Scranton, Pa. - Women's Lacrosse returned to the Marywood University campus with new faces but a familiar story as the Pacers downed Gwynedd Mercy University 15-3 Saturday in the Atlantic East Conference opener. The Pacers broke away from a tied game midway through the first half with six unanswered goals, and they added four in a three-minute span to bury the Griffins.

Brielle Peters more than doubled her career high with a seven-goal performance. Natalie Walker made her Marywood debut with two goals and three assists.

Melanie Wittick stymied the Gwynedd Mercy offense with seven ground balls, four caused turnovers to complement four draw controls. Maddy Langlotz contributed four ground balls, and Walker added three ground balls.

Kayla McCabe produced the first hat trick of her career. Mikayla Matthews and Emma Solomon matched their personal bests for points with two and three, respectively.

In other firsts, Lauren Matarazzo had her first two career assists, and Ashley Cunningham had her first assist. Lilli Foote netted a career-high three ground balls.

Earning the win was Emily Dyminski with six saves in goal. Gia Burdick made one save in 20 minutes of action. Their counterpart Reilly Owens was outstanding in net with 17 stops.

Gwynedd Mercy received goals from Damali Teagle, Jill Kane, and Meleah Hoats.

The Griffins looked poised to end Marywood's unbeaten Atlantic East streak of seven games with an early Teagle goal less than three minutes into regulation. Just over a minute later, McCabe evened the score at 1-1 on a Solomon feed.

That began 12 minutes of uninterrupted play with both conference foes jostling for early momentum. Walker steered the Pacers (1-0) ahead with an unassisted goal at 14:23. She doubled the lead on a free-position shot seven minutes later. After a pair of Peters goals in a 15-second span, Cunningham engineered the run's terminus by setting up a McCabe netter after her shot dinged off the post.

After their lead was cut down to four at halftime, Marywood doubled it in the opening five minutes of the second frame. Solomon barrelled through a crowd of Griffin defenders to open the half. Peters pushed the Pacers ahead 10-2 with a woman-up goal via a Matarazzo feed from the behind the net.

Marywood's series winning streak against the Griffins extends to 11 games.

The Pacers will welcome Neumann University on Wednesday in Atlantic East action.
