Men's Tennis Clinches Playoff Berth with 5-4 Win Over Griffins

Gwynedd Valley, Pa. - Despite forfeiting three matches at three doubles as well as five and six singles, Marywood University earned a post-season berth in the Atlantic East Men's Tennis post-season tournament with a thrilling 5-4 win over host Gwyedd Mercy University Saturday afternoon.

The men's tournament, which will take place Thursday (semifinals) and Saturday (finals) at the highest seeds is yet to have seeding determined. Marywood (2-2 Atlantic East) currently sits in third place, but Immaculata (2-1 AEC) and Cabrini (3-0) must still play. Gwynedd Mercy (2-2) beat Immaculata, so if the Mighty Macs fall to Cabrini there will be a tiebreaker used to seed the 2-2 teams from number two through number four.

Down 3-0 because of the aforementioned forfeits, Marywood took both doubles matches to get back to a one point (3-2) deficit entering singles play. Eddie McGreevy and Stefano Varela-Seri were easy 8-1 winners at one doubles. Jarrod Palmer and David Chemidlin earned a hard-fought 8-7 (7-3) win at two-doubles which proved crucial. 

In singles action, McGreevy was a 6-1, 6-1 winner in the top singles flight while Varela-Seri won 6-3, 6-0 at two-singles. After Gwynedd took the three-singles matchup to even things at 4-4, Chemedlin sealed the win with a 6-4, 6-2 win at four singles to win the match for the Pacers.
