Déjà Vu: Baltrusaitis Blasts Go-Ahead Grand Slam in Seventh Inning

Aston, Pa. – For the second consecutive series, Marywood University freshman centerfielder Samantha Baltrusaitis hit a go-ahead grand slam in the team's final set of at-bats. Baltrusaitis' bases-loaded blast capped the Pacers' sweep of Neumann University in Atlantic East Conference softball action on Saturday.

Playing for the first time in 15 days due to Covid-19 protocols, Baltrusaitis hit her second home run of the day to cap a six-run seventh inning. Trailing by three runs, the Pacers rallied with six runs in their last set of at-bats of the night cap.

Marywood (8-4, 6-2 Atlantic East) edged the Knights in both contests. The Pacers won the opener 5-3 and finished with a 10-7 victory.

Baltrusaitis picked up from where she left off during the Pacers' last series on April 15. She capped a four-run rally with an ultimate grand slam – a bases-loaded home run trailing by three in the final inning – to defeat Gwynedd Mercy University.

This time around, she hit a two-out grand slam down the left field line that gave Marywood a 10-7 advantage. Baltrusaitis leads the Pacers with six home runs and 21 RBIs in 12 games.

Facing a 7-4 disadvantage, the first four batters hit singles to set up the rally. Brooke McKay drove in pinch-runner Sarah Sharp, and Sierra Mulgrew singled to right field to send home Mara Hamm. After the relief pitcher earned a strikeout, Emily Rose loaded the bases with a single to center field with coach John Butash giving the stop sign to the runner at third with Elizabeth Shire's accurate arm in the outfield. The Knights made a heads-up field throw to home on Annie Heyen's fielder's choice to third baseman Rachel Albertson.

Baltrusaitis finished the game by batting 3 for 5 with five RBIs. Hailey Rapisardi hit safely four times, and Hamm produced three singles. Rose scored three times.

Gianna Marsico (5-2) picked up the win with three strikeouts in a complete game.

Much like Baltrusaitis' previous game-winning grand slam, it was the first extra-base hit of the contest. Marywood hit 16 singles prior to her home run.

Neumann (9-11, 7-11 Atlantic East) was led by three RBI efforts from Bri Lagroteri and Albertson.

Marywood 5, Neumann 3 (Game 1)

Baltrusaitis hit a two-run home run in the first inning of the opening game. She went 1 for 4 with two RBIs.

Annie Heyen batted 3 for 4 with a run and an RBI. Abbey Stalter had a pair of base hits with a run and an RBI.

Neumann halved the Pacers' two-run lead with a run in the bottom of the first. Shire knocked in Lagroteri with an infield single. Heyen responded in the top of the third, driving in Stalter on a single to left-center field to stretch the lead back to 3-1.

Marywood produced a pair of runs to take a 5-1 lead in the top of the fourth inning. Stalter hit an RBI single to the left side of the inning that brought in Hamm. Julianna Beidler and Stalter teamed up for a double steal with leading runner Beidler sneaking in under the tag for the run.

The Pacers' defense helped get out of a sixth inning jam after the Knights cut the lead to two runs. With no outs and a runner on first, a sacrifice bunt resulted in a rare 3-4-6-5 double play. Rapisardi picked up the bunt and tossed to second baseman Beidler covering first base. Beidler caught the lead runner trying to advance to third. Beidler threw to shortstop Rose, and Rose threw to Kristie Epler at third to clear the bases.

Hamm allowed two earned runs in a complete game with four strikeouts.

Marywood hosts first-place Wesley College on Sunday at 1 p.m.
