Defense Propels Marywood to First Win Over Eastern

Mulherin nets game-winner in 56th minute

Scranton, Pa. - Marywood University women's soccer picked up their first win over Eastern University in program history as the Pacers edged the Eagles 1-0 on a second half goal from Riley Mulherin.

Marywood (2-1) entered Saturday's non-conference tilt 0-10 all-time versus the Eagles (1-2-1) 0-10 all-time. The last time the two teams met was in 2007 when both teams were members of the former Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC).

The Pacers' defense, led by Rebekah Becker in goal and captains Ashlyn Jess and Brooke Longstreet, kept the visitors in check all game, limiting Eastern to just three shots on goal, all of which were handled by Becker in her first clean sheet of the season.

After holding a 6-3 advantage in shots in the opening stanza but without finding the back of the net, Marywood picked up offensive pressure over the opening minutes of the second frame, finding success in the 56th minute of action. Mulherin's game-winner came off a cross from rookie classmate Madison Blackshire. It was the second consecutive game that Mulherin found the back of the net. Blackshire chased down a ball on the right flank, pressured and stripped a defender off a turn inside the 18, continued her run to the middle then found a streaking Mulherin from the far side for a one-time finish from six yards out.

Marywood outshot the visitors 13-7 for the game. Both teams had four corners. Becker's counterpart Emily Honig made four stops for the Eagles in the loss.

Marywood faces regional power Franklin & Marshall College Tuesday night. Kickoff in Scranton is set for 7:00 pm.
