Field Hockey Stifles Colonels in Shutout Win

Marywood scores two penalty stroke goals in 46 seconds

Scranton, Pa. - Marywood University captured a shutout victory over local rival Wilkes University Wednesday in non-conference field hockey action. The Pacers defeated the Colonels by a 6-0 score.

Marywood opened the game with back-to-back penalty stroke goals in a 46-second span.

Cydney Lahr led the Pacers with two goals and an assist. Mackenzie Hoats tallied a pair of goals.

Senior Lauren Smith scored the first goal of her career. Lauren Youngken had a goal, and Angie Genter supplied an assist.

Defensively, Rachel Yohn made seven saves to get her second clean sheet of the season. Marywood received a defensive save from Cassie Slusser, Klaira Bievenour and Grace LePage

The Pacers win their second consecutive game against the Colonels. Prior to their overtime win, Marywood had lost at least nine consecutive games to Wilkes, dating back to 2015.

In the sixth and seventh minutes, Marywood had penalty stroke opportunities that were converted for the first two goals of the game. Lahr and Smith found the back of the cage to give the Pacers a 2-0 lead.

In the second quarter, Hoats gave Marywood a 3-0 advantage. Lahr took the ball from midfield and raced past defenders on the left side. She delivered a live ball that was deflected into the cage by Hoats.

Marywood tacked on two goals within a two-minute span in the third quarter. Lahr beat the goalkeeper from the left side with a shot to the right side of the cafe in the 35th minute. Ninety-five seconds later, Hoats again deflected a ball delivered from the top of the cage by Genter.

The Pacers (4-3) capped their scoring in the fourth quarter. Youngken stripped the ball off of a defender at the top of the scoring circle and beat the goalkeeper on a one-on-one chance.

Marywood outshot the Colonels by a 27-10 margin with a 16-10 advantage on target. The Pacers had 21 penalty corners to Wilkes' three.

The Pacers continue their five-game home stand Saturday with a noon tilt against Cedar Crest College.
