Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer Outlasts Alvernia for 1-0 Win

Scranton, Pa. - Despite outshooting visiting Alvernia 24-7, including a 11-1 mark in shots on goal, it took a Madison Blackshire goal with under two minutes remaining in regulation for Marywood's women's soccer team to put away the Golden Wolves.

Controlling tempo throughout was not an issue for the Pacers (4-3), but getting through a packed back line and preventing a counter attack proved to be a challenge throughout. Marywood saw numerous close chances either saved by Alvernia's Brynn Bock, hit off the crossbar or sail just wide.

Marywood had a 13-4 advantage in shots in the opening half, but could not get one by Bock as both teams headed to the break knotted at 0-0. The second half showed the same frustrations for the Pacers' attack until Victoria Tzitzis's shot from the right flank, which was saved by Bock, came to the feet of Blackshire who blasted home a one-time shot from 17 yards out with 1:47 to go.

Josephine Sorce placed two of her team-high six shots on goal, but Tzitzis put all four of her efforts on frame. Rebekah Becker made two saves and the Pacers' defense held firm for their second consecutive clean slate, thanks in part to a goal-line clearance at the far post from Julia Rodriguez after a Golden Wolves' attempt on a corner kick.

Alvernia dropped to 3-4 with the loss.

Marywood is at Wilkes Wednesday night for a 7:00 pm kickoff.
