Pacers' Upset Bid of #18 Vassar Slips in Final Minutes

Rachel Yohn stops nine shots in collegiate debut

Poughkeepsie, N.Y. - A late goal in the final minutes of regulation was the lone difference in Marywood University's 1-0 loss to No. 18 Vassar College Friday in the field hockey season opener. It was the Pacers' first game since the 2019 NCAA First Round—a total of 660 days.

Featuring a team of 23 players and 11 new starters making their collegiate debuts, the Pacers held their own for 56 minutes against the nationally ranked Brewers. Marywood will take on another field hockey stalwart Stevens Institute of Technology Saturday on the second day of the Betty Richey Tournament.

Avery Bauman notched Vassar's game-winning goal with 4:13 minutes left before the final whistle. A Hailey Brugger pass from the top of the middle circle was redirected by Bauman into the right corner of the cage.

Marywood (0-1) was led by freshman goalkeeper Rachel Yohn's nine saves in her Pacers' debut. Corrin Hasty recorded a defensive save.

After being held without a shot, the Pacers attacked the Brewers in the second quarter with three on target. With seven minutes left in the first half, Sami Abbinanti attempted a shot that was stopped by Vassar keeper Sarah Dumaresq, and Angie Genter's rebound shot from the insert position was dually thwarted. Cassie Slusser had a shot on target late in the period.

The Pacers' best chances came in the third period with three shots in a 12-second span. Genter had an open look past the keeper that was defensively saved by Vassar's Heidi Compton.

Vassar held on to an 11-6 advantage over the Pacers in shots on goal. The Brewers out-matched Marywood 9-5 in penalty corners.

Marywood will take on the Ducks at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Vassar and Stevens will conclude the tournament on Sunday.
