Late Goal Sinks Pacers' Upset Bid of Montclair State

Montclair, N.J. - A late goal on Montclair State University's seventh and final corner kick of the game helped propel the host Red Hawks over upset minded Marywood University 2-1 in women's soccer action Sunday afternoon.

Montclair State finished 2019, the last full season of soccer, ranked seventh in the South Atlantic Region. The Red Hawks are expected to be regionally and possibly nationally ranked when the first regular season United Soccer Coaches poll of 2020 comes out Tuesday afternoon.

Aileen Cahill netted both goals for MSU, the first in the 21st minute and the game-winner in the 86th off a corner kick from the foot of Chisom Onyewuenyi.

While MSU (2-0) out-shot the Pacers 20-6, Marywood (1-1) kept just nine of those attempts on frame.

The opening 18 minutes of action saw Marywood starting keeper Rebekah Becker make three saves. At the 18:15 mark, Becker came to the top of the box to stop a breakaway attempt and could not avoid a collision with an oncoming Red Hawk attacker. That crash resulted in Becker being pulled from the game.

Her replacement, Victoria Talarico, was tested right away as Cahill found an opening through the Pacers' defense and ripped a shot to the far left netting and a 1-0 lead.

After setting down, Marywood kept the MSU attack in check for the remainder of the half and had a couple of dangerous looks of their own.

Playing more physically in the second half helped the Pacers control tempo at times, and that effort eventually paid off in the 69th minute. Victoria Tzitzis found her way around a defender on the left flank and crossed to the far post where a waiting Riley Mulherin sent it back into near post side netting to knot the game at 1-1.

With both teams pressing for the winning goal, MSU generated three corner kicks in the final 10 minutes, the last of which Cahill put home by winning a header inside the six and putting it into the back of the net. The Pacers would get no more dangerous looks as MSU tactically wasted time in the attacking corner of the field as the clock expired.

For the game, Talarico made four stops in her collegiate debut and Mulherin netted her first collegiate goal.

Marywood will host The University of Scranton on Wednesday evening at 7:00 pm. The Royals (2-0) have won both of their games in shutout fashion and recieved votes in the preseason top 20 United Soccer Coaches poll.
