Pacers' Second-Half Comeback Hopes Dashed in Final Minutes

Pacers trailed by double-digits at halftime

Radnor, Pa. - Marywood University came just three points shy of replicating a double-digit second half comeback for the second time this week. The Pacers fell to Cabrini University 81-78 in Saturday's Atlantic East Conference men's basketball matchup.

Brandon Reed scored a season-high 26 points. Reed went 12 of 13 from the free-throw line, and he added five assists.

Jason Holman factored in with 19 points. Adam Boussatta had a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds. Brendan Franko contributed 10 points.

With the Pacers' triumphant second-half comeback from 15 points down against Centenary on Wednesday fresh on players' minds, Marywood nearly repeated the achievement for the second time this week. A Reed jumper just before the first-half buzzer slimmed the Pacers' halftime deficit to 11 points.

Cabrini stretched the lead to 12 (49-37) at the 17:35 mark of the second half. Enrico Mastroianni's squad responded in due fashion with an eight-point run over the next 2:13. Franko's bucket in the paint put the Pacers within four points.

Marywood needed another momentum swing after trailing by 11 with just under nine minutes to go. The Pacers churned a 10-point run. Holman's long-range basket capped the run and put the Pacers within one (71-70) 4:54 on the scoreboard. Fifty seconds later, Marywood finally evened the score (74-74) with one of Reed's dozen free throws on the night.

Boussatta responded to Aquil Stewart's layup with a pair of free throws to tie the game again at 76-76. After the Cavs recaptured the lead to go ahead by three, Reed tallied a layup in the paint at 1:02 to give the Pacers' a chance with a 79-78 deficit. Stewart made one of two free throws with 19 seconds left.

A missed chance gave way to Cabrini possession with four seconds left. The Cavaliers immediately turned it over, but Marywood gave the ball away on its possession just the same. Stewart again made one of two free throw attempts. A last-chance half-court shot fell short.

Corey Perkins totaled nine rebounds and four assists for Marywood.

Cabrini was led by Stewart's 26 points. Brice Parks and Billy Warren had 15 points.

Marywood out-rebounded the Cavaliers 41-37. The Cavaliers won the turnover game by a 18-13 margin.

For the second straight game, it was a tale of two halves for the Pacers. In the second half, Marywood shot 46.88% percent from the field  after connecting on just 30.77% in the first. The Pacers were proficient from the charity stripe, making 25 of 28 attempts at a 89.3% clip.

Marywood travels to Immaculata University for a rescheduled game on Monday.
