Trevor Seitz hit a three-pointer with two seconds remaining to lift Marywood University to a 81-78 road win at Immaculata University Monday evening. The Mighty Mac's half-court attempt as time expired missed.
Seitz's heroics held off a strong second half comeback from the hosts, who trailed a hot-shooting Marywood team by 10 (54-44) at the half. Marywood levels their Atlantic East mark at 2-2 with the win and improves to 7-9 overall while the Mighty Macs drop to 4-10 (0-2 AEC).
The first half was dominated by the Pacers, who got 19 points in the first 20 minutes from
Jason Holman and another 10 from Seitz. Seitz's near buzzer-beater resulted in his only points in the second half, giving him 13 for the game.
Holman dropped 19 first half points on 7 of 8 shooting from the floor a perfect 3-for-3 effort from long range and 2 of 2 shooting on the free throw line. Overall in the first half, Marywood shot 60% (18 of 30) from the floor and the Pacers were 8 of 10 from long range while being 10 of 12 from the charity stripe.
Immaculata hit 8 of 12 from deep in the first half to stay within striking range, but was limited to 44.1% shooting overall by the Pacers' defense. Marywood was up by as many as 17 (49-32) with 4:13 to go in the opening half.
The Mighty Macs opened the second half on a 14-5 run over the first 3:15 of the second half to cut their deficit to one (59-58). They would eventually knot the game at 61-61 on a three-pointer by Brandon McCullough and took a brief lead (65-61) on a pair of freebies and another bucket from McCullough.
Adam Boussatta tied the game up for Marywood, and Brandon Franko would put Marywood back up by sinking two at the line. The Mighty Macs kept their impressive second half performance up, and eventually went up 76-71 with just over five minutes remaining.
Holman would connect on a big three to cut the Pacers' deficit to just two with 4:15 to go, and a Holman layup with 1:31 to play tied the game at 78-78. Each team would miss a chance before Marywood forced their fifth turnover with 10 seconds remaining. After a timeout, Seitz hit from the corner for the game-winner.
For the game, Holman finished with a game-high 28 on 11 of 19 shooting from the floor and a 4 of 8 effort from three-point range. Boussatta finished with 18 on 7 of 12 shooting (2 of 3 from beyond the arc) and Seitz, as mentioned, finished with 13. Holman grabbed seven boards and Boussatta had a team-high eight rebounds. Marywood finished the game shooting nearly 46% (28 of 61) from the floor, 11 of 26 (42.3%) from long range and 14 of 19 (73.7%) from the free throw line.
McCullough and Gregory Vlassopoulos each had 24 points for Immaculata. Steven Dao had a game-high 14 rebounds for the Mighty Macs.
Marywood hosts Gwynedd Mercy Wednesday evening at 8:00 pm in a "white out" game at the Insalaco Arena.
