Women's Basketball Rallies Past Gwynedd Mercy for AEC Win

Scranton, Pa. - Trailing by eight at halftime, Marywood University's women's basketball team rallied past visiting Gwynedd Mercy University for an important Atlantic East Conference win Wednesday evening at the Insalaco Arena.

The Pacers got a game-high 24 points from Olivia Ciullo and had three other players in double figures as they improved to 7-8 overall and 2-3 in league play. The Griffins had a pair of 20+ point scorers in Elise Sylvester (22) and Haley Crossley (21) but fell to 9-10 (3-3 AEC).

Gwynedd opened up a 10-point (30-20) first quarter cushion on the strength of 59% shooting from the floor while holding Marywood to under 37% (7 of 19).  Both defenses played tough in a low scoring second quarter that saw just a combined 22 points (12-10 Marywood). The Pacers' defensive efforts in the second quarter held GMU to 4 of 13 shooting while Marywood shot under 30% (5 of 17).

The Pacers took over after the break. Shooting at nearly 62% clip in the third, the Pacers erased their eight-point halftime deficit and took a 63-62 lead into the fourth after Ciullo sank two free throws at the end of the third. Again, Marywood's defense held strong, holding GMU to 33% in the third.

In the fourth, GMU was again held cold, going 7 of 23 from the floor and connecting on just one of 10 from beyond the arc. That last three came with just seven seconds left in the game when the Griffins trailed by eight.

Neither team shot well for the game from beyond the arc, with Gwynedd hitting 10 of 34 (29.4%) and Marywood connecting on just 7 of 27 (25.9%) long-range attempts. Gwynedd also shot just 58.8% (10 of 17) from the charity stripe.

Ciullo's game-high 24 came on 11 of 18 shooting from the floor while Savannah Purdy had 15.  Kilie Wyers and Abbey McGee each added 12. Faith Kendricks had nine boards.

Crossley had a game-high 17 rebounds to complete a double-double for the Griffins. Marywood's bench outscored that of the visitors 17-8.

Marywood returns to action Saturday when they host Immaculata at 1:00 pm.
