Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Pacers Upended by Macs in Atlantic East Overtime Opener

Jade Rolon extends game with buzzer-beating floater

Immaculata, Pa. — The first Atlantic East Conference women's basketball game in 23 months needed more than 40 minutes to decide a victor on Wednesday evening. Marywood University fell to Immaculata University 62-57 in an overtime thriller to start the conference slate.

Jade Rolon extended the game with a buzzer beater. With four seconds remaining, Rolon took the ball herself, crossed between two defenders on the perimeter and sank a floater from 10 feet on the right-hand flank.

The Pacers' luck ran out at the hands of the Mighty Macs' newfangled long-range success. After making just 9 percent of its shots beyond the arc in regulation, Immaculata connected on all four 3-pointers in the overtime period.

Marywood's Bethany Maby opened with a three on the opening possession, and the Mighty Macs responded with an 8-0 run to take a 55-50 lead with two minutes remaining. The Pacers inevitably cut the game to one (58-57) on a Stephanie Klemick fast-break layup from Rolon with 39 seconds left. Erin Kelly's 3-pointer in the corner with nine seconds left secured the Mighty Macs' victory.

Savannah Purdy led the Pacers with 20 points on a 7-from-15 performance from the field. Abbey McGee made her Marywood debut with an 11-point effort, in addition to seven rebounds.

Stephanie Klemick logged a double-double with 10 points and 12 reboards. Seven of her boards came off the offensive glass.

Immaculata (8-2, 1-0 AEC) received a 16-point effort from Theresa Kearney. Abigail Lentowski posted a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds.

The Mighty Macs held a 49-43 advantage in rebounds. Marywood held a distinct 40.4-to-27.9 percent advantage from the field. The Macs' used their success at the charity stripe to their advantage; the Pacers' 43.8 percent mark from the line paled in comparison to their opponents' 69.2 percent (18-of-26) figure.

Each of the last two meetings between the two teams resulted in overtime.

Marywood (5-6, 0-1 AEC) will be back in action Saturday at the Insalaco Arena. The Pacers will host defending Atlantic East champions Marymount University at 1 p.m. The second half of the scheduled doubleheader, featuring the men's basketball team, has been postponed. All fans are required to wear masks at all times during attendance of Marywood indoor athletic events.
