Gwynedd Valley, Pa. - Marywood University women's soccer continued their hot streak as the Pacers defeated Gwynedd Mercy University 7-0 to improve to 7-5-1 on the year (3-0 Atlantic East).
Marywood, winners of six straight, had 51 shots in the game - equaling the second-most all-time - and placed 29 shots on goal (third best all-time). The Pacers did not allow a shot in 90 minutes of action.
After dominating the opening 15 minutes without finding the back of the net, Marywood capitalized in the 17th minute when Riley Mulherin won a battle down the left win, slotted across the goal mouth and after Victoria Tzitzis' shot was saved, Carly Walters tapped it home to put the Pacers up 1-0.
In the 30th minute of play, the Pacers scored on nearly an identical play when Mulherin again went down the win and this time shot it herself - only to have it saved - before Isabel Shore tapped home the rebound into an empty net for her first collegiate goal.
Four minutes before halftime, Caroline Plank won a physical battle and tapped the ball to Shawna Hauck, who touched to her right and hit a spinning bender to the near post from just outside the right corner of the 18-yard box.
After the half, Marywood put the game with four goals in a five-minute span. In the 56th, Mulherin found the back of the net on a breakaway after getting a long feed from Josephine Sorce. Less than two minutes later, Mulherin netted yet another goal off an assist from Walters.
In the 60th minute of play, Tzitzis put the Pacers up 6-0 when she dribbled around numerous defenders before ripping a shot to the low right corner netting from 23 yards out in the center of the field.
Tzitzis then helped close the scoring in the 61st minute when she beat a defender down the left flank, ripped a cross into the box that deflected off of Sorce's back into the net.
Rebekah Becker played 75 minutes without making a save and Mila Elash closed the shutout in goal, playing the last 15 minutes. Becker did make one decisive stop right before exiting which prevented a dangerous look from the Griffins in the corner of the 18 yard box.
Gwynedd Mercy's keeper Molly Fleming made 22 saves, a season and career high. The Griffins fell to 2-9-3 (0-3 AEC) with today's loss.
Marywood hosts Marymount (Va.) Saturday at 1:00 pm in a key Atlantic East showdown.
