Men's Soccer Stymied by Knights on Senior Night

Kiernan Wilder tags sixth goal of the year

Scranton, Pa. — After a three-hour delay, Marywood University fell to Neumann University 6-1 Saturday in its Atlantic East Conference men's soccer regular season finale. The Pacers secure the No. 6 seed in the conference playoffs, and they will await their opponent as the rest of the conference finishes their schedule next week.

Marywood recognized nine student-athletes on its Senior Night before a crowd of 252 fans.

Travel issues postponed the game from its 4 p.m. to under the lights. The Knights showed little travel fatigue with four goals in the opening 24 minutes — all of which were scored or assisted by Gianni Smith.

Jon Zubert gave the Knights an early lead in the eighth minute on a Smith assist.

Smith had a hat trick with three goals in a 13-minute span. He scored on an Andres Velez pass in the 11th minute. Jake Kuzmick assisted another goal in the 16th minute. Smith hit a laser from 21 yards away for the hat trick. He had just one goal on the season entering the game.

Will Flores and Nick Jones each scored their first of the season for Neumann. seniors

Marywood scored his lone goal in the 80th minute. On a set piece, Kiernan Wilder scored his sixth of the season on a David Nichols cross from the left flank.

Hyde made four saves. His counterparts Seth Walker (five saves) and Carson Metzger (two saves) combined for the win.

Despite the score, the Knights shared just a 16-14 advantage in shots and a 10-8 edge in shots on target. Marywood led 7-5 in corner kicks.

Marywood heads to Central Pennsylvania to take on Susquehanna University on Wednesday night.
