Pacers Knock Down Gwynedd Mercy to Notch No. 4 Seed

Marywood will host the No.5 Griffins Tuesday in the Atlantic East first round

Gwynedd Valley, Pa. - Needing a shut out to secure a home playoff game, Marywood University swept Gwynedd Mercy University 3-0 Wednesday in its Atlantic East Conference volleyball finale. The Pacers jump two spaces in the conference standings to notch the No. 4 seed in the Atlantic East playoffs. 

Marywood will host the fifth-seeded Griffins Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Atlantic East first round. The Pacers (12-15, 2-4) beat out Gwynedd Mercy and Centenary University on tiebreakers. 

The Pacers defeated the Griffins by scores of 25-12, 28-26, 25-22. 

Shannon Corr provided the Pacers with an all-around effort with 22.5 points. Offensively, she finished with 15 kills and a .522 attack percentage, in addition to five aces. On the defensive side of the court, she blocked four total shots and led Marywood with 13 digs. 

Sydney Steiner matched Corr with five aces. She had a team-high 20 assists. Libby Smith finished with four aces.

Mikayla Meek totaled eight kills with 11 assists.

Gwynedd Mercy was led by Bria Purnell's 11 kills. Amanda Lopez had a game-high 22 assists. 

In the first set, Marywood blew the doors open with an 11-point run on Steiner serves that grew its lead to 23-8. 

The most hotly contested set came in the second. Gwynedd Mercy was two points away from set point when Meek and Corr followed with kills to take a 24-23 advantage. Both teams traded points until Casey Hagerstrom gave Marywood a 27-26 lead with a kill. Smith secured set point with a kill off of a Meek feed. 

The Pacers came back from a 9-1 deficit in the third set that clinched the No. 4 seed. Back-to-back Hagerstrom kills ignited the team, and Marywood outscored the Griffins 13-3 to even the score at 12 apiece on a bad set. Both teams traded leads until Meek gave Marywood a go-ahead point at 20-19. Leading 24-22, Hagerstrom produced match point. 

For the match, the Griffins led Marywood in hitting percentages .153-to-.103. Marywood was dominant in the service game, leading the Griffins 17-5. 

The Pacers have a pair of non-conference home matches to close out the regular season. Marywood will welcome New Jersey City University on Thursday night and host Oswego State on Saturday afternoon for its Senior Day.
