Pacers Catch Fire in Second Half with Six Goals

Meghan Van Wert finishes with two goals for Pacers

Scranton, Pa. — Held scoreless throughout the first half, Marywood University piled on six unanswered goals to defeat Neumann University Wednesday to open Atlantic East Conference field hockey play. The Pacers defeated the Knights for their seventh straight win in the series.

Meghan Van Wert and Brianna Sumner each finished with a pair of goals. Angie Genter had a goal and an assist.

Marywood outshot the Knights by a 32-0 margin and had a 13-0 advantage in penalty corners.

Shannon Gosline opened the scoring in the 32nd minute. A ball pushed into the circle got behind the goalkeeper, giving Gosline an open shot at the cage for the first goal of the game.

Three minutes later, Meghan Van Wert intercepted the goalkeeper's pass and rifled a shot to the near corner from 15 yards out. Sumner increased the lead to 3-0 in the 37th minute.

Marywood added three more in the fourth period. Van Wert connected on a Genter cross to the right side and one-timed from 5 yards away in the 47th minute. Three minutes later, Genter struck a Cassie Slusser feed for goal. Sumner capped the scoring in the 55th.

Yohn finished with a clean sheet. Neumann's Meg Frame had 12 saves, and Lizzie Frame had a defensive save.

Marywood looks for its first winning streak of the season when it hosts Gwynedd Mercy University on Saturday at 3 p.m.
