Women's Basketball Topples Rutgers-Newark, 72-61

Olivia Ciullo nets double-double of 20 points, 15 rebounds

Scranton, Pa. — Marywood University downed a scrappy Rutgers-Newark team for a 72-61 victory Thursday in non-conference women's basketball action. It marks the first time the programs have faced each other.

Olivia Ciullo posted the team's first double-double of the season with 20 points and 15 rebounds. Ciullo went 8 of 14 from the field and added three assists.

Savannah Purdy was a rebound shy of joining her. Purdy finished with 18 points and nine rebounds. Stephanie Klemick and Kate Baylor finished with 10 points apiece.

Abbey McGee provided six assists, and Jade Rolon made three steals.

Newark was led by Ebony Odom Barnes' 26-point performance with nine rebounds. Syncere Lambert had 15 points.

Marywood's defense kept the Scarlet Raiders to less than 20 percent in the first half.

The Pacers (2-1) went ahead 12-3 midway through the first quarter before a six-point run closed it to a one possession game at the first intermission.

Marywood kept Rutgers Newark scoreless for a five-minute stretch of the second period. Ciullo made a jumper from a back-door Baylor assist to take a 30-18 lead with 1:31 remaining. Rolon floated a jumper from Rachel McDonald just before the buzzer to go into halftime with a 34-20 lead.

The Pacers seemed to have the game in good hands in the third quarter. Marywood made 10 of 20 shots during the period, and a 14-2 lead culminated in a Ciullo jumper that gave the Pacers a 22-point lead at the 4:20 mark.

Over the next 14 minutes, Rutgers Newark chipped away at Marywood's lead. Lambert chopped the Pacers' lead to three possessions when her unassisted jumper made it 61-52 with 2:41 left. Marywood scored on its next four possessions to seal the victory, capped by a Stephanie Klemick jumper.

Marywood shot 40.6 percent from the field to the Scarlet Raiders' 33.8 percent figure. The Pacers were unsuccessful on 11 tries from beyond the arc. Marywood outrebounded Newark by a 52-42 margin.

The Pacers will compete in the Cross County Challenge on Saturday and Sunday at Wilkes University's Marts Center.
