Pacers Upend Monarchs to Extend Winning Streak to Three

Abbey McGee named to All-Tournament Team

Wilkes-Barre, Pa. - Marywood University won a share of the women's basketball Cross County Challenge title with a 67-61 victory over King's College on Sunday. The Pacers earn their first victory over the Monarchs since November 2018.

Abbey McGee was named to the All-Tournament Team. McGee led the Pacers with 21 points and six assists.

Olivia Ciullo posted a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Savannah Purdy garnered 13 points with seven off the glass.

Marywood finished the first quarter with a 16-13 lead with a clutch Rachel McDonald jumper in the closing minute.

After King's moved within one to start the second, Marywood scored eight straight points. A Maddie Niederer jumper from McDonald gave Marywood a 24-15 lead with six minutes remaining. The Pacers had their largest lead of the half (36-25) on a Ciullo basket at 1:10, and King's Cailin Wilson made a 3-pointer to move within single digits before the break.

The Monarchs outscored the Pacers 11-3 to move within just two points (59-57) on an Alli Lindsay long-ranged shot just under the three-minute mark. Stephanie Klemick drained a crucial basket at 2:31, and McGee made a pair of free throws to stretch the Pacers' lead to six in less than 80 seconds. Jade Rolon displayed her wide-range of skills with a steal and offensive board late in the game as Marywood capped an eight-point run on her free throws.

King's had one last chance with a 3-pointer to cut its deficit to 66-60 with 22 seconds left. McGee's free throw made it a three-possession game with not enough time to allow for a late Monarch threat.

The Monarchs out-rebounded the Pacers 42-38. King's shot 37.7 percent, and Marywood made 46.6 percent. Both teams struggled from the line. Marywood made 45.8 percent of its attempts, and the Monarchs connected on a mere third of its shots.

Scranton defeated Wilkes 70-32 in the other game to share the title with the Pacers.

King's Kiersten Krouse, Wilkes' Erin Shober and Scranton's Bridget Monaghan and Hannah Angelini were named to the All-Tournament team. Angelini was the Tournament MVP.

Wilson led the Monarchs with 12 points.

Marywood is idle for the holiday and will return to the Marts Center for the third straight game to take on Wilkes next Monday.
