Women's Soccer Reclaims Title for Fourth Championship

Caroline Walters scores game-winner in 83rd minute

Scranton, Pa. — Marywood University reclaimed the Atlantic East Conference women's soccer championship with a 1-0 victory over Neumann University on Saturday afternoon. The top-seeded Pacers collected the fourth conference title in program history.

Marywood (11-6-2) wins the title for the first time since taking the inaugural Atlantic East Conference Championship in 2018. Coach Andrew Smith's squad secured an automatic berth to the NCAA Division III tournament for the third time in school history. They will make their first appearance since the 2016 season.

Freshman Caroline Walters scored the game-winning goal in the 83rd minute. Riley Mulherin took the ball along the left flank and delivered a cross to Victoria Tzitzis. Tzitzis rifled a shot that was deflected by a Neumann defender. Walters collected that attempted clear and slotted it into the right side of the net for her third goal of the year.

Kate Kollar-Dye was selected the Tournament MVP. Kollar-Dye earned it as a forward that generated offensive opportunities when she touched the ball. She had a game-winning goal in the Pacers' 3-0 victory over Marymount in the semifinal.

Emily Welsh, Marywood's holding midfielder, was named the Atlantic East's Elite 20 award winner for having the highest GPA among all student-athletes competing in the women's soccer final.

Rebekah Becker made a pair of saves to capture her 11th victory of the season. In the eighth minute, Neumann's Chloe Britton curled a corner kick into the top frame, and Becker pushed the ball away for a stop. She made another save on Riley Adinolfi's shot in the 52nd minute.

The Knights (8-9-4) was led by Leona Macrina with10 saves. Macrina made a head-high save on a Brooke Longstreet shot in the 76th minute. She stopped a terrific ball off another Longstreet set piece that was redirected by Kollar-Dye's head in the first half.

Marywood outshot the Knights by a 25-3 margin and had an 11-2 advantage in attempts on target. The Pacers edged Neumann 6-4 in corner kicks.
