Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Splits with Wilkes, Hands Colonels First Loss

Fort Pierce, Fla. - Marywood University split baseball action with Wilkes University Thursday afternoon in Florida. The local rivals, playing each other on spring break, took one game apiece. Marywood lost the opener 4-3 but handed the Colonels their first loss of the year, 11-5 in game two.

Marywood improves to 5-3 on the year and Wilkes moves to 8-1.

In the tight opener, Wilkes built a 3-2 lead early then held off a late Marywood rally attempt for the 4-3 victory. A RBI double and score on a wild pitch had Wilkes up 2-0 early. Marywood got one back in the second after scoring on a throwing error.

A sac fly from Quinton Roma tied things up 2-2 in the top of the second, but an RBI single had Wilkes back up 3-2 in the bottom half of the frame. The Colonels would use another RBI single to left center in the fifth for an important insurance run before Marywood to an RBI single from Jake Schuster in the seventh to make it a one run game, but were held there.

TJ Lacey suffered the loss after striking out five and allowing three earned runs over 4.1 innings of work. Danny Becker pitched a perfect 1.2 innings in relief. Vinny D'Auria and Kyle Morin each had doubles for the Pacers in the opening game loss.

In the nightcap, Marywood used a five-run fifth inning to take over the game and added three more in the sixth for the 11-5 win.

Trailing 4-3, Marywood tied the game by scoring on a wild pitch then used a three-run double from James Myers to take a lead they would not relinquish. Myers would double again in the sixth to bring home another run and give the Pacers a 9-5 lead.

Joseph Bruno then brought home two runs in the sixth on a single to left, making it a six-run Marywood lead.

D'Auria had another double in game two, while Myers finished with four RBI. Bruno brought home two. AJ Jordan (1-0) got the win on the mound, striking out three while allowing just one hit in two innings of middle relief work. Tyler Quick, who entered with the potential tying runner at the plate, got his third save of the year, going 1.1 innings and striking out one without allowing a hit.

Marywood closes their spring break trip tomorrow with a doubleheader against Penn State Behrend. Game one gets underway at 11:30 am.
