Baseball Extends Win Streak to Five, Sweeps John Jay in Home Opener

Scranton, Pa. - Marywood University balanced strong starting pitching, solid relief work and hefty bats as the Pacers swept John Jay College Sunday afternoon in non-conference baseball action. The Pacers took their home openers 12-1 and 8-1, improving to 9-3 on the year and extending their win streak to five games.

The Pacers used a pair of five run innings in the opener to cruise to the win. Marywood plated five in both the first and fourth. After an RBI single gave the Bloodhounds a 1-0 lead in their first set of at-bats, Marywood responded with a RBI single from Michael Tempel, a two-run single from Kyle Morin and a run scoring single from Ryan Evans to take a 5-1 lead after one.

In the third, Evans drove in another run with a single down the left field line and Vinny D'Auria singled to center to bring the Pacers' lead to 7-1. In the fourth, James Myers doubled to left center to bring home Tempel, Evans singled through the left side to score Ben Gravel, Quinton Roma singled home Myers and Jake Schuster's two-run single scored Roma and Evans.

On the mound, Nick Notari (2-0) allowed one unearned run in four innings. He struck out one and gave up three hits. From there, four pitchers struck out three and allowed just one hit in three innings of relief work to secure the victory.

In game two, Michael Aronica (3-1) used just 54 pitches over five innings to tame the Bloodhounds. Aronica struck out four and allowed just three hits. TJ Lacey and Matthew Klipple each pitched one inning and each struck out two without allowing a hit.

Schuster and Matthew Ortiz each knocked in two runs in the 8-1 win. Schuster blasted his first and second homers of the year in the third and fourth, both over the right field fence.

Marywood is at King's College Wednesday for a 4:00 pm non-conference single game.
