Marywood, Delaware Valley Split Softball Action

Doylestown, Pa. - Marywood University outlasted host Delaware Valley University 8-3 in a extra-inning nightcap after the Aggies snapped the Pacers' six-game win streak in the opener Tuesday afternoon in non-conference softball action. Marywood moves to 9-3 after the split.

Marywood trailed the nightcap 3-2 before forcing extra innings when Sara Sharp scored on an error in the top of the seventh. In the eighth, Marywood used a few miscues by the hosts to score five runs and take the 8-3 win. Gina Marsico allowed just one hit and struck out four over 6.2 innings of relief work to get the victory. Marsico (4-3) also pitched the opener and did not allow an earned run over the two games.

Marywood had a 2-0 lead after their first at-bats thanks to RBIs from Ashdon Clark (hit by pitch with bases loaded) and Julianna Beidler (sac fly to center). Del Val quickly answered with one in the bottom of the frame, then took a 3-2 lead with a pair of runs early in the bottom of the second.

A Clark single and a fielding error allowed the eventual game-winning run to cross for the Pacers in the top of the eighth, and Abbey Stalter would single in another run. Marywood plated two more on a throwing error, and a final run on an RBI single from Lindsey Jason. Jason had a pair of RBI in the win and Samantha Baltrusaitis was the lone Marywood batter with multiple hits.

In the opening game, the Pacers gave up two unearned runs on an error in the bottom of the first and could not recover. Despite holding the Aggies scoreless the rest of the way, Marywood could not find any offense of their own as their six-game win streak came to a close. Marsico allowed just five hits - none for extra bases - and struck out one in her complete-game effort.

Jason and Cait Becher each had a pair of hits in game one.

Marywood is back in action Saturday when they travel to New Jersey to take on Centenary University in Atlantic East Conference action.
