Pacers Continue Hot Start, Sweep Centenary

Hackettstown, N.J. – Marywood University swept host Centenary University Saturday in Atlantic East Conference softball action to improve to 11-3 (4-0 AEC) on the year. With the victory, the Pacers have won nine of their last 10 and continue one of their best starts in program history.

The Pacers took game one 7-3 and the nightcap 7-4.

In the opener, Marywood jumped out 1-0 in the first when Ashdon Clark flew out to center to score Lindsey Jason from third. The Pacers doubled their lead later in the inning when Brooke McKay flew out to left, scoring Samantha Baltrusaitis.

In the top of the second, Jason drove home Annie Heyen with a run-scoring single to right. Centenary tied things up in the bottom of the fourth with a three-run inning, but Marywood reclaimed a 4-3 lead in the visitor half of the fifth with Cait Becher's run-scoring double to left.

Marywood would then add three insurance runs in the sixth. Emily Rose reached base and Julianna Beidler (West Scranton) - who had doubled to open the inning - scored. Clark and Baltrusaitis drove a pair of runs on sacrifice flies to center and

Mara Hamm remained unbeaten (6-0) on the year, striking out three and allowing just five hits in the complete-game victory.

Beidler went 3-for-3 at the plate, and Jason and Becher were both 3-for-4. Baltrusaitis and Hamm both had a pair of hits.

In the nightcap, Gianna Marsico went the distance on the mound to improve to 5-3. Marsico struck out three and walked just one in the win.

Up 2-0 after a pair of second inning runs, Baltrusaitis homered over a deep centerfield fence - her third his season - to put Marywood up 3-0 in the third. After the Cyclones (3-12, 0-4 AEC) got one back on an RBI double in the fourth, Kristie Epler's RBI single to center put the Pacers back up three, 4-1.

Abbey Stalter then drove in two more runs with a single to right, extending the Pacers' lead to in the top of the sixth.

Centenary did not go away and gained two back in the bottom half of the sixth with a pair of RBI singles, but after Marywood scored an unearned run in the top of the seventh the Cyclones could not complete the comeback despite plating another run in their last set of at-bats.

Marywood will host The University of Scranton Wednesday for a non-conference twinbill. Game one gets underway at 3:00 pm.
