Monmouth (Ill.) Sweeps Marywood in Florida Opener

Fort Pierce, Fla. - Monmouth College (Illinois) swept Marywood University in the opening doubleheader of the Pacers' Florida spring break trip Monday afternoon. The Scots (4-2) won by scores of 5-3 and 5-4.  Marywood fell to 2-2 with the losses.

In the opener, Marywood plated a run in each of the first three innings, but could not hold off the Scots' comeback as they scored one apiece in the fourth and sixth innings before taking the game with a seven-run seventh.  Monmouth out-hit Marywood 8-6 in the opener.

Michael Tempel singled in the game's first run, and Vinny D'Auria doubled the Marywood lead with an RBI single in the second. In the third, Tempel homered to expand Marywood's lead to 3-0.  Monmouth answered with a solo homer in the fourth to get on the scoreboard, and got to within one (3-2) on an RBI single in the sixth.

In the top of the seventh, a two-run single gave Monmouth a 4-3 lead, and they scored an insurance run on a fielder's choice.

D'Auria and Tempel each had two hits. Nick Notari pitched six innings, allowing two runs on five hits. Tyler Quick took the loss in relief.

Like the opener, the second game was evenly played with both teams picking up seven hits. Marywood's four errors proved costly though as the Pacers fell 5-4.

After Monmouth grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first, Temple brought home Jake Schuster on a RBI groundout to tie the game in the third. A two-run double from the Scots in the bottom half of the frame put them up 3-1, but Marywood tied it in the fourth on a two-run double from Morgan Theobald.

Monmouth reclaimed the lead with a solo blast in the fifth, and again picked up an insurance run when they plated a run on a wild pitch in the sixth. That run would be the difference maker, as Marywood could only get one back off a Ben Gravel RBI single in the top of the seventh.

Michael Aronica took the loss on the mound after allowing three earned runs in five innings. He fanned four. Matthew Klipple struck out two in an inning of relief work.

The Pacers will take on Geneva College (Pa.) tomorrow in a twinbill slated for a 2:00 pm start.
