Rose Hits Ninth Inning Walkoff Triple on Opening Day

Clermont, Fla. - Emily Rose hit a game-ending, bases-loaded triple to give Marywood University softball an Opening Day victory in Florida on Monday. Rose's walkoff hit capped a two-run comeback with two outs in the ninth inning.

Marywood University softball split opening day action on their spring break trip in Florida as the Pacers upended Concordia Chicago 8-7 in extra innings before falling to Ursinus College in the afternoon.

Game 1 - Marywood 8, Concordia Chicago 7 (9 inn.)

Emily Rose's bases-clearing triple in the bottom of the ninth lifted Marywood to a thrilling 8-7 come-from-behind win over Concordia Chicago in the Pacers' spring break opener. Down 7-5 entering their final at-bats in extra innings, Marywood loaded the bases before Rose played the hero role.

Marywood took an early 4-0 lead on the strength of a Nina Kozar three-run homerun in the bottom of the first. Kozar's blast followed a Samantha Baltrusaitis RBI double that gave the Pacers a 1-0 lead. Kozar's long ball was the second of her career and first since March 13, 2020 - Marywood's final game in Florida versus Hood before the season was shut down due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Concordia-Chicago got one back in the top of the second on an RBI single to right from Annabella Archuletta, and got two more in the fourth to make it a 4-3 ballgame. Three consecutive singles to open the top of the fourth crossed two runners for the Cougars. Holding the one-run lead with just one out, Marywood got a strikeout from Mara Hamm and a groundout back to her to end the inning.

The Cougars knotted the game at 4-4 in the top of the sixth. Following back-to-back strikeouts from Hamm, Archuletta doubled and moved to third on a fielding error. She would come home on the next at-bat as Nikita Robbins singled to right to bring her home and tie the game.

With international tie breaking rules in place (runner placed on second), each team would score a run in the eighth. Archuletta was placed on second base to start the top of the ninth for the Cougars and Robbins singled to center to score the go-ahead run. Robbins then came home on a sac fly to right to provide Concordia-Chicago with a 7-5 lead. After two strikeouts to open the bottom of the ninth, Hamm picked up an infield single to give the Pacers runners on the corners with two outs, and Julianna Beidler walked to load the bases up.

With the count at 2-2 , Rose tripled to left field, bringing home Kozar, Hamm and Beidler for the win.

Marywood out-hit the Cougars 10-9, but did have five errors. Hamm went the distance for the Pacers on the mound, allowing three earned runs on nine hits while striking out eight. Kozar finished the opener going 3-for-4 with a homer and team-best three RBI. Ashdon Clark and Rose each had a pair of hits.

For the Cougars, Ashley Shroll struck out 11 and allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits. Starter Kate Roberts allowed four runs on five Marywood hits in 2/3 of an inning pitched.

Game 2 - Ursinus 16, Marywood 2 (5 inn.)

In the nightcap, Ursinus College (4-1) used a pair of eight-run innings to secure a 16-2 win in five innings. The Bears' first wave of runs came in the second inning and they never looked back. Back-to-back two-run doubles highlighted the Bears' big inning in the bottom of the second. Marywood got two back in the top of the third on RBI singles from Rose and Clark.

Ursinus would add another eight runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Rose and Clark each finished the nightcap 2-for-3 at the plate while Kris Epler was 2-for-2. Rose had Marywood's lone extra base hit, a double.

Marywood returns to the diamond Tuesday March 8 when they will take on Lakeland University (10:15am) and Berea College (12:30pm). No live stats will be available for either game, but video will be available via Flosoftball subscription service
