Pacers, Knights Split One-Run Games

Slusser drives in winning run in 10th for Marywood in nightcap win

Scranton, Pa. - Max Slusser drove in the winning run with a single to right in the 10th inning of the nightcap as Marywood defeated Neumann 4-3 in Atlantic East baseball action Monday. The Knights took the opener, 3-2. Marywood took two of three from Neumann in the regular season series.

Slusser's heroics drove in Quinton Roma, who had reached on a fielding error earlier in the inning. Marywood moves to 16-7 (5-4 AEC).

Marywood grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third inning of game two when Jake Schuster singled to right, scoring Roma.  Neumann tied the game in the fourth as Shawn Vega homered to left center, his first of two long-balls in the game.

Marywood took a 2-1 lead in the fifth on a Slusser RBI single down the left field line that scored Michael Tempel. Then, with the bases loaded, Morgan Theobald walked allowing Kyle Morin to trot home from third, giving the Pacers a 3-1 lead.

Vega knotted the game in the sixth with his second homer of the game. He drove a 2-2 count pitch over the center-field fence, tying the game at 3-3.

Matthew Klipple got the win on the mound for Marywood after one inning of relief work. Klipple struck out three of the five batters he faced in the top of the 10th.

Tyler Quick struck out four and did not allow a hit in two innings (eighth and ninth) of work, while Danny Becker also did not allow a hit and struck out one while pitching the seventh in relief. Starter Michael Aronica went six innings, allowing three runs on three hits while fanning five.

Tempel was 3-for-5 with a double in the win, while Schuster and Slusser botht had two hits. Theobald also doubled for the Pacers.

In the opener, a sacrifice fly in the first gave the Knights (8-13, 4-5 AEC) an early lead. They went up 2-0 in the third when Vega drove in a run on a sac fly to center, and took a 3-0 lead in the third off a Ryan Lopez RBI double to left center.

Kyle Morin cut into the Knights' lead with a solo homer to left in the bottom of the sixth, and Joseph Bruno would score on a fielder's choice in the seventh to make it a one-run game. Marywood could not get any more though as Will Hart got the last two Marywood batters to fly out.

Hart (4-1) went all seven innings for Neumann, striking out six in the complete-game victory. Marywood's Nick Notari (4-1) suffered his first loss of the year after allowing one earned run and striking out three.

The Pacers travel to nearby Clarks Summit University for a non-conference twinbill Tuesday.
