Baseball Walks Off Against Cairn, Gets 19th Win

Scranton, Pa. - Michael Tempel drove in the winning run in walk-off fashion to lift Marywood University baseball to a 7-6 win over Cairn University Wednesday afternoon in Scranton. Tempel singled through the left side to score Joseph Bruno from second for the Pacers' 19th win of the season.

Bruno entered as a pinch runner after designated hitter Max Slusser doubled. Marywood improved to 19-13 with the win while Cairn fell to 25-12.

After Cairn took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a pair of unearned runs, Marywood scored five in the second to take the lead. Ben Gravel doubled in a run to start the Pacers' scoring blitz. Vinny D'Auria then drove in a run with a single up the middle. Morgan Theobald then drove in two with another single up the middle, and Jake Schuster's single through the left side scored Theobald for Marywood's fifth run of the inning.

Cairn got one back in the seventh on another unearned run. Matthew Ortiz provided Marywood with a run in the eighth with an RBI hit that scored AJ Giannetti.

Cairn tied things up in the top of the ninth with a run-scoring double and two-run single, forcing Marywood to make the most of their last set of at-bats. Slusser's one-out double to left center gave the Pacers a runner in scoring position, and pinch runner Bruno came around when Tempel drove him home in the next at-bat.

Marywood used a slew of pitchers throughout. AJ Jordan and Danny Becker provided five innings of scoreless relief for the Pacers, and Michael Klipple (2-0) got the win on the mound.

The Pacers will celebrate senior day on Saturday with a non-conference doubleheader against St. Joseph's University-Brooklyn. Game one gets underway at noon.
